What is an off-grid solar system?

The name implies not being connected to the electricity grid that requires power storage in batteries. Off-grid solar systems permit solar power stored in batteries that will be used for future purposes. Electricity is stored in batteries and then used in appliances.

How does an off-grid solar system work?

There is no public electricity grid in an off-grid solar system. Power in excess will be sent to the battery bank once solar power is used by the appliances in your property. During cloudy days or at nighttime (when the solar system does not work), batteries will serve as the power source.

How many solar panels do you need to go off-grid?

The number of solar panels needed is connected with your energy consumption. The average off-grid household needs 7kW if you reside in a very sunny climate.  If you want to use a backup system, you need 27 solar panels to produce 7kW for this household.

What are thin film, monocrystalline, or polycrystalline solar panels?

There is not a lot of difference between monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels. The latter is slightly larger than the former. A solar panel will produce its rating regardless of size. However, it is recommended to use monocrystalline or polycrystalline instead of thin films for remote power and off-grid applications.

How much battery storage do I need to go off-grid?

This depends on your energy consumption. If you plan to run a few small appliances, LED lighting and a notebook, all day, a 100 AH battery is sufficient as long as it is paired with the proper solar panel.

What is a solar regulator?

A solar regulator (aka charge controller) controls the battery bank and regulates the charge to provide maximum charging without damaging the battery bank through overcharging.

How many solar panels do I need to power a refrigerator?

It takes three to four average solar panels to run an average refrigerator. An average refrigerator uses 57kWh per month.

Should I opt for an off-grid or an on-grid solar power connection?

Most homeowners opt for a solar on-grid solar system compared to a solar off-grid system because it has a lower cost of installation. They are assured that in the event the solar panels produce less electricity, their homes will still have electricity from the utility provider.

Can I install an off-grid system by myself?

Laws and regulation in Brisbane require that installation must be done by licensed solar panel installers.

What is the current solar rebate in Queensland?

Most Queensland residents can benefit from a discount on new solar installations. The amount of  $2,797 is the average solar rebate.

What is the allowed size regulator?

There must be a greater amp rating of the solar regulator compared to that of the solar panels.

Where should the fuse go?

A fuse should be placed directly before the regulator. This will serve as protection for both the regulator and the battery bank.
